If you are in the wine industry, this is a picture of people you should know.

This past Sunday and Monday, June 10th & 11th marked the very first Wine Competition voted solely by Millennial judges.

2010 Judges:

Chris Riccobono – Pardon that Vine

I started collecting wine when I was 21.  I found it more than just a hobby but a way of life.  Instead of reading novels, I would read tasting notes and books on wine.  In 2007, I decided that I wanted to launch a video wine blog.  While at the time I believed that I was extremely knowledgeable, I wanted to become an “expert” before launching to the public.  For 2 years I tasted wine almost everyday, doing blind tastings and matching my notes against other tasting notes.  I also spent a lot of time with people in the industry learning as much as I could.

In 2009, I launched pardonthatvine.com.  I currently have a strong following and host all types of tastings as well as do wine consulting.  I have consulted for wine importers and distribution companies.  I am also currently consulting with a new vineyard that is being built. A lot of my success has come from my experience with social marketing and different techniques that I use:http://www.facebook.com/pages/pardonthatvinecom/160291366759?ref=ts and http://twitter.com/pardonthatvine I launched pardonthatvine.com for a few reasons.  First of all, to me there is a lot more to wine thanjust drinking it – it is a way of life.  It can turn any monotonous day into a very special day.  For example, the average person on a Wednesday night might go to the local Italian restaurant and have dinner and go home.  If I go to the Italian restaurant, I will bring my own glasses, pick out a great bottle of wine and tell my guests to bring a nice bottle of wine as well.  When we get there it is like a special event.  We decant the wine, bring out the glasses and talk about the wine.  How many other non-living things in this world change over time, improving at times, shutting off, turning on etc.  How many food/drinks can be enjoyed decades after they are made…. very few. Wine is essentially living and constantly changing.

The main reason I launched pardonthatvine.com is to change the stereotype that wine is complicated, intimidating and only for upper class (snobs) people.  Unlike its reputation, one can drink wine any time, any place, all people can drink it and all people can learn about it.  My goal is to not only educate existing wine drinkers but to get people who kind of like wine and who don’t drink wine at all, to become lovers of wine.  I keep people interested by constantly changing the format of the show, tasting while fishing, tasting at my wedding, tasting on a safari, on a plane etc. I simply love wine!

Angelina Mondavi – Assistant Winemaker, Pine Ridge Vineyards

Angelina Mondavi’s interest in the wine industry began as a young girl. Growing up in the family wine business at the Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena, Napa Valley, California, she showed dedication and determination and decided to become a fourth generation winemaker.

Her route to becoming a winemaker began with her first job at age ten assisting the lab manager at Charles Krug. By high school, she had mastered laboratory techniques, how to pull samples and set up wine tastings in the tasting lab. Upon graduating from high school, she entered Villanova University and spent six months abroad, studying in Italy. Angelina chose to major in chemistry with a minor in business for a solid foundation for a future in the wine industry.

After graduation from Villanova in 2004, she branched out to work at the Hess Collection Winery and coordinated laboratory and bottling operations during harvest. Her vision for her future rested on learning winemaking techniques in Australia, and after harvest at Hess, she assumed a harvest position at the Yalumba Wine Company, in Barossa Valley, Australia, where she expanded her laboratory knowledge and developed experience in cellar operations.

She chose to further her education, and, in 2006, graduated with her Master’s in Oenology from the University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus located in South Australia. Before returning to Napa, she was the wine manager at Enzo’s Restaurant where she not only produced the wine list but also conducted wine staff training. A final stint in Australia was as a cellar hand at the famed Cape Mentelle Winery.

Returning to California, Angelina joined Pine Ridge Vineyards as Assistant Winemaker in July of 2007, located in Napa Valley.  She has completed her third crush at Pine Ridge.

She is active in many organizations including being assistant coach for the varsity softball team at Justin Siena High School, to also being a member of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and the American Chemical Society.  She is an Executive Board Member for the Villanova Marketing and Public Policy Advisory Board, as well as being an Executive Committee Member for the South Australian Sommeliers’ Association.

Mentors have always played a key role in Johnny’s professional development.  He was first inspired to pursue wine as a career by Sommelier Belinda Chang. At the time, Chang ran the wine program at The Fifth Floor Restaurant and garnered great acclaim.  Johnny’s goal became running the wine program at The Fifth Floor Restaurant.

It all started at a family gathering when a Italian family doctor dipped a piece of bread in wine and applied it to the teething gums of baby David. “From that point forward wine has always been a passion in my life,” states David. Born and raised in Sonoma County, in the Russian River Valley, David Vicini, one of the proprietors of Trecini Winery, brings a long heritage of Italian wine making to Sonoma County.  David’s family has been in Sonoma County since the 1950’s and in 1994 started growing premium grapes for numerous vintners and in 1999 started their own label, Trecini (The Three Vicini’s).  With his Dad’s Tuscan heritage of wine making dating back to the 1800s, the Vicini’s passion is creating wines that are lower alcohol, high in flavors, and geared primarily towards pairing with food. New world wines with old world flare.  After a stint in the Army, David came home to help run the winery as the house sommelier, marketing and sales director, and usually the first one to make sure your glass is never empty.

David has tested within the Master Court of Sommeliers, attended numerous wine based schooling, a judge in other wine competitions, and has successfully snuck into the best kitchens located throughout California. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Masters of Business degree. When not drinking wine professionally he is usually being seen around Sonoma County in numerous wineries and restaurants supporting the local businesses. He also spends his time as a proud father to his new born baby boy.

Lulu Roberts – Wilder Napa Valley / Food and Wine SF

My passion for wine began when I was at university in the United Kingdom reading politics at the University of Durham (a city famous for its bars and restaurants). I was bored of cocktails and spirits and decided to start learning about something my mother had been passionate about for years. Lucky enough to be brought up in a house dedicated to the creation of fantastic food and the drinking of great wine I had a good foundation but as life got in the way I thought my love and interest for wine would just become a hobby. How wrong I was.

In 2008 I met my fiancé and work brought him to the states where I was lucky enough to meet Doug Wilder, author of the ‘Purely Domestic Wine Blog’ and owner of Wilder Napa Valley, www.wildernapavalley.com who recognised my enthusiasm and took me under his wing.

Two years later I am now working as his eyes, ears and tasting palate in the city, attending food and wine events, searching for exciting finds and unknown stories alongside running my own personal blog – www.foodandwinesf.com which is dedicated to revealing the hidden culinary and wine delights this city has to offer

My experience tasting in the city and searching out real wine finds has given me a ‘nose’ for both the new and exciting as well as the staunch classics, which mustn’t be forgotten or overlooked. I approach wine as a lifestyle choice – a decision to love and learn about it as well as aiming to share it with anyone who has an interest so that they too can obtain an understanding of what goes into making a wine truly great.
